Port of Algeciras concludes SMM Hamburg participation with Green Energy Hub at the core of its offering
APBA and the Port Community showcased their ship-related services and LNG and BioLNG bunkering capabilities at an edition that brought together more than 50,000 participants and 2,300 exhibiting companies
The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) and the Port Community have concluded their participation in SMM Hamburg 2026, held from 1 to 4 September, where the Algeciras delegation focused its commercial activity on its range of ship-related services and the port’s established position in the supply of low-carbon transition fuels.
The Port of Algeciras participated in the German maritime trade fair under the Green Energy Hub brand, coinciding with an edition in which the decarbonisation of maritime transport, safety, energy efficiency and the resilience of supply chains featured prominently on the agenda of SMM meetings and conferences.
Following the exhibition, APBA reported that, during the first half of 2026, the supply of low-carbon transition fuels, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable-origin liquefied biomethane (BioLNG), increased by more than 6% at the quays and anchorages of Algeciras. This performance enables the port to maintain the level of commercial activity achieved in 2025, when it ranked among the top three European LNG bunkering hubs.
This position was based on the figures recorded last year. In 2025, the Port of Algeciras supplied 333,833 cubic metres of LNG to vessels through 78 ship-to-ship bunkering operations. According to data from Gasnam, subsequently released by APBA, Algeciras ranked third in Europe in this segment, behind Rotterdam and Marseille Fos. Of the total volume, 51,923 cubic metres were BioLNG.
The latest Gasnam figures, compiled from Kpler data and published during SMM, also provide an indication of the development of the Iberian market. Between January and June 2026, LNG bunkering in the Iberian Peninsula reached 4,742 GWh, representing a 62% increase compared with the same period in 2025. Of this total, 228 GWh corresponded to BioLNG, accounting for approximately 5% of the overall volume.
The bunkering infrastructure available in Spain and Portugal has also expanded. Gasnam recorded nine LNG bunker vessels operating in 2026, compared with six the previous year. In ship-to-ship bunkering operations, the Iberian Peninsula currently accounts for 27.4% of the European volume, while the continental European market as a whole recorded a 25.3% increase during the first half of the year.
According to Gasnam, based on Kpler data, Algeciras is also one of five Iberian locations ranked among Europe’s top ten LNG bunkering ports. Alongside Algeciras, the list includes Gibraltar, Barcelona, Sines and Málaga.
These figures formed part of the commercial context in which APBA and Algeciras Port Community COMPORT attended SMM Hamburg, sharing a stand within the Spanish Pavilion, Hall B1.OG, Stand 119. Throughout the four-day event, the Algeciras delegation presented the Bay’s available capabilities to shipowners, vessel operators and international maritime service providers, highlighting its capacity to handle vessel calls and a wide range of maritime operations.
The services showcased included ship agency, ship repair and marine electronics, ship chandlery and provisions, crew changes, maritime legal services, underwater services, MARPOL services, marine electronics, equipment supply and bunkering. The Port of Algeciras stand also hosted a meeting with customers and representatives from the maritime industry on Wednesday, 2 September.
Alongside representatives of APBA and the Port Community, participating companies included Pérez y Cía. Group, Ayllón Abogados, Alfaship, Arola Shipping, Bayport Global Supplies, BMT Repairs, Cadiship Shipping and Logistic Agents, CJ Services Strait of Gibraltar, Crosscomar, Dino Theo Atlantis, Elcome Europe, Garant Safety, Gas Marine, Gibunco Ship Agency, Incargo, Jason Marine Electronics, Neko Ship Supply, Reparaciones Marítimas Españolas (Remesa), Radio Onda Servicios Marítimos, Sandvik Marine Electronics and Zener Marine Elevator.
The Algeciras delegation attended an edition of SMM that attracted more than 50,000 participants from 134 countries. The organisers recorded approximately 2,300 exhibiting companies from 66 countries, occupying more than 90,000 square metres across twelve exhibition halls, with more than 70% of exhibitors coming from outside Germany. The figures released by SMM at the close of the event are preliminary, as they were calculated before the final day had fully concluded.
Held every two years in Hamburg, SMM brings together shipyards, shipping companies, equipment manufacturers, maritime suppliers, classification societies, technology companies, institutions and organisations from across the maritime industry. The 2026 edition featured a strong focus on decarbonisation, energy efficiency, digitalisation and artificial intelligence, alongside an increased emphasis on maritime safety and the resilience of logistics supply chains in responding to disruptions in international trade.
The next edition of SMM is scheduled to take place in Hamburg from 5 to 8 September 2028.
